More than 300 local people joined over 60 Air Cadets from Longbenton as they celebrated the formation of the Air Cadet Organisation.
Families, members of the public and North Tyneside MP, Mary Glindon, celebrated recent achievements, with BTEC qualifications, leadership qualifications and Duke of Edinburgh Awards being presented to the youngsters.
The commemorative celebrations were held to mark the 76th anniversary of the formation of the Air Cadets, with 20 new young people enrolled onto the top performing squadron in the north-east and a service was held at St. Bartholomew’s Church, Benton.
Mrs Glindon told the young people and the community: “This is my 7th Air Cadet Sunday with Longbenton Squadron and it is a highlight in my calendar.
“The sheer fun enjoyed by the young people is clear to see and to present so many awards and welcome new members is a privilege.
“The commitment, dedication and enthusiasm of the young people is a testament to the time given by the volunteer staff and the squadron’s leadership.
“I know that Longbenton is very proud of the squadron’s young people and North Tyneside as whole is also proud.”
Cadet Ana Botezatu, 14, said: “It’s really good fun being in the Air Cadets and I always look forward to going to the squadron because it’s very active and we get to spend time with friends and make new friends.
“We do lots of different activities but my favourites are sports, leadership and of course, flying!”
The Longbenton Squadron has been recognised as the Top Training and Development Squadron in the Durham/Northumberland Wing for the past five years.
The Squadron is currently open to new members in Year 8 and above. If you’re up for a challenge then visit squadron at www.2344.org.uk.
