Greater Manchester Wing's CWO Pauline Williams takes to the sky thanks to RAF Charitable Trust and RIAT.

Greater Manchester Wing attended the Royal International Air Tattoo Cadet Camp as a Wing contingent for the first time in July 2016, and saw huge success as CWO Pauline Williams of 182 (North Trafford) Sqn came away with the main prize: RIAT Cadet of the Camp, out of 750 cadets! As a result, Pauline has recently been completing flying training with Oxford Aviation Academy.

Her prize, provided by the RAF Charitable Trust and awarded by Air Marshal Sir Kevin Leeson, was a substantial flying training package of up to 20 hours. This May, Pauline has attended Oxford Aviation Academy for nearly three weeks, completing an intensive programme of flying training, ground school and simulator experience. By the end of her stay with Oxford, Pauline completed 14 hours flying training in the Academy's Cessna 182. She has also managed to do some great airborne sight-seeing at the same time, as her training has taken her over Oxford, Lincoln, Skegness, Bournemouth and Cardiff!

Speaking of her training in the Cessna 182, Pauline commented that it was challenging, and feels heavier to fly than the Tutor, but that she has really enjoyed getting to grips with it. She was also quite proud of her 'practically perfect' landing in the Seneca 5 simulator.

In addition to her own training, Pauline has also been able to experience flights in some of the Academy's other aircraft including the Seneca 5, has observed flying exams and studied alongside trainee pilots who are aiming to go on later to commercial airliners. Overall an incredible and valuable experience for an Air Cadet.

Oxford Aviation have also confirmed that Pauline can return to finish her 20-hour flying package at a later date. Pauline has really got a taste for flying now and is hoping to save up for further training and complete her PPL. She is also attending the RIAT Cadet Camp again this year with GM Wing.

CWO Williams and the Greater Manchester Wing Aviation team would like to express their thanks to RAF Charitable Trust, the RIAT Cadet Camp organisers and Oxford Aviation Academy.
